Self-Directed Learning
Self-directed Learning is about taking responsibility and ownership of your learning path. Contrary to the school system which dictates what, how and when you will learn, a self-directed philosophy allows the learner to make these choices. It is based on the premise that everyone, from infants to elders, has an innate desire and capacity to learn – and given the resources, will do so without external pressure. It is the most natural process for humans to seek and absorb that which is useful and fulfilling. The power of internal motivation cannot be matched by external pressure to do something.
The beauty of self-directed learning is that the genius of discovery lies in the learner, not the teacher. This discovery is then owned and integrated more fully and in a way that empowers the learner to stand on their own two feet, self-confident and able to competently move through life.
The challenge is that most of us have been force taught for the majority of our lives which has usurped our internal motivation and twisted the concept of learning into something that is work – not the joyous unfolding it can be! The Ecological Living Project seeks to unleash this internal power by allowing participants to reclaim their own learning path. It is a step in becoming empowered to create what you want in your life.
